What is the Safest Part of the Traffic Lane for a Motorcycle

When riding a motorcycle, should you position yourself to the right, left, or center of the traffic lane?

According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the safest position depends on the traffic situation. Riding in the left or right portion of the lane allows drivers to see you in their side view mirrors. However, the center lane position is often the best for visibility in the driver's rearview mirror and to prevent other vehicles from sharing your lane.

General Guidelines for Lane Positioning

  1. Visibility: A motorcycle close to the yellow line is more visible to cars. This is due to the geometry of sight lines in rearview mirrors.

  2. Older Drivers: As drivers age, they rely more on mirrors due to reduced neck mobility. This makes mirror visibility crucial.

  3. Oncoming Traffic and Turns: Being in the far right can improve visibility for oncoming traffic and ahead on turns. For example, near the Caldecott Tunnel in Oakland, traffic can suddenly stop, and a far-right position increases visibility and reaction time.

Wind Turbulence and Large Vehicles

Riding in the center of your lane behind a large vehicle can cause significant wind turbulence, making it harder to control your motorcycle and potentially affecting fuel efficiency. To avoid this, maintain a safe distance and position yourself near the yellow line.

Legal and Safety Considerations

Motorcycle accidents are often unfairly blamed on the smaller and more vulnerable vehicle as most of the population drives cars and sees motorcycles as noisy annoyances. An experienced motorcycle accident attorney turns this around and shows that the motorcycle is the safe vehicle and the car driver is at fault in the accident.

Most Highway Patrol officers understand these factors and will not question your judgment in the event of an accident.

However, if an accident case goes to trial, having a traffic engineering expert explain your road position can be crucial. Experienced trial attorneys can help ensure fair settlement offers from insurance companies based on their reputation for successful outcomes.

Other factors that experienced motorcycle accident attorneys understand is what we call "undercurrent road rage" where people endanger motorcyclists in a suppressed anger that causes them to use their larger vehicle in a way that can be annoying or angering but can often lead to accidents.

Finally in terms of lane position, it is important (at times) to document this.  If you are sideswiped, it may establish the other driver's fault if we show that you were positioned so that you were clearly visible in the car/truck's mirrors.  Again this requires an extra level of effort and expertise by your lawyers but can be the difference between uncontested liabillity and a speedy settlement and a long drawn out legal process.
